One Planet Summit: Gabon, first donor of African Adaptation Initiative 

Paris – 12 December 2017 – The President of the Republic, His Excellency Ali Bongo Ondimba has announced today, that Gabon will contribute up to USD 500,000 to the African Adaptation Initiative’s budget, which is expected to be effective and operational by 2020.

« Je demeure convaincu que financer la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique représente un coût bien plus supportable que celui d’en observer les conséquences sur notre planète (…) », a déclaré le chef de l’Etat lors de son intervention au segment de haut niveau du One Planet Summit organisé par son homologue français, le Président Emmanuel Macron.”I remain convinced that financing the fight against global warming and climate change represents a cost far more bearable than that of observing the negative impacts of climate change on our planet (…),” said the Head of State during his speech at the high-level One Planet Summit organized by his French counterpart, President Emmanuel Macron.

Ali Bongo Ondimba, qui s’exprimait mardi dans un panel portant sur les solutions financières innovantes au service de l’adaptation, a défendu la position du Gabon, mais aussi celle de l’ensemble du continent africain en sa qualité de coordonnateur du Comité des chefs d’Etat et de gouvernement africains sur les changements climatiques (CAHOSCC).Ali Bongo Ondimba during his key note speech to a panel on innovative financial solutions for adaptation, has defended Gabon’s position, and also of the whole African continent, in his capacity as Coordinator of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).

On this occasion, the President of the Republic called on the global financial and banking system for more innovation by proposing new mechanisms registered under the label ‘Climate Label’.Mécanismes qui permettraient le financement d’investissements durables.Mechanisms that would allow the financing of sustainable investments.Ces produits innovants devront offrir« des taux et des conditionnalités préférentiels », a proposé Ali Bongo Ondimba.These innovative instruments will have to offer “preferential rates and conditionalities,” suggested Ali Bongo Ondimba.

Pour rappel, l’Initiative africaine sur l’adaptation a été créée en juin 2015 lors du Sommet des chefs d’Etat de l’Union africaine.As a reminder, the African Adaptation Initiative (AAI) was created in June 2015 at the African Union Heads of State Summit.  Formally launched during the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21), the AAI’s objective is to speed up the implementation of concrete adaptation measures to climate change.
